Slope’s scheming is finally catching up with him. As the Dean of Barchester Cathedral lies on his deathbed, an article appears in the local newspaper suggesting Slope should succeed him—and everyone suspects he planted it himself. At the Thornes' annual garden party, Eleanor hopes for a moment alone with the intriguing Francis Arabin, but Slope keeps interrupting. When he finally proposes, she delivers a sharp and painful rejection. To her surprise, that isn't the only marriage proposal she receives that day.
