Slope continues his subtle manipulation, having overstepped by offering the Warden position to Quiverful. He convinces Proudie that if Quiverful withdraws, the post could go to Harding instead. Slope pressures the gentle Quiverful into stepping aside, but fails to anticipate Mrs. Quiverful, who storms straight to Mrs. Proudie to protest. When the Bishop’s wife discovers Slope used her name in his scheming, she becomes a dangerous enemy. Meanwhile, Slope persists in visiting Signora Madeline Neroni, clearly infatuated. Elsewhere, Harding and Eleanor visit Archdeacon Grantly and Susan. Grantly, still spoiling for a fight with Slope, objects when Eleanor receives a letter from him.
