Throughout history, humans have been preoccupied with forecasts of their own extinction and the end of the world. What insights can we gain to avert threats to our existence? Could a nuclear catastrophe reminiscent of Chernobyl lead to mass devastation? Or might a virulent pandemic, akin to the Black Death, cripple society? There's also the risk of a colossal tsunami engulfing coastlines, or a supervolcano unleashing catastrophic destruction worldwide. Is it possible for humanity to steer clear of an apocalyptic fate?
