Eric steps in to help Ted and Emily, a couple facing the possibility of divorce. Meanwhile, Matt makes a bold decision to enlist in the Army without discussing it with his parents. Mary and Lucy, eager to escape their home, find themselves in a car accident with a drunk Ted, who was out getting beer for his new place. Unfortunately, Matt's enlistment is thwarted as he hasn't completed the necessary measurements. Simon searches for his red-lightning ring in hopes of reversing his bad luck as the family’s new middle child and even resorts to chain letters for help. Meanwhile, Ruthie struggles to capture attention as everyone is preoccupied with the new babies.
