Benton struggles to secure employment as Romano's detrimental impact affects the nearby hospitals. He reluctantly takes up Romano's insulting proposition for a per diem position at County, which lacks any benefits. Meanwhile, Kovac and Abby face an assault from a mugger wielding a steel pipe. In the heat of the moment, Kovac defends Abby, brutally smashing the assailant's head against the pavement multiple times, leaving both shaken by the violent encounter.
