Dinty Gallagher remains steadfast in his use of diet pills and steam baths, ignoring the fainting spells he experiences. His relentless efforts to shed pounds for the biggest race of his life lead to a severe physical breakdown, landing him in the hospital. While there, he inadvertently listens to Doctors Welby and Kiley inform his manager that tests reveal he is still growing at 21, making it impossible for him to pursue a career as a jockey any longer.
