Hennebeau informs the miners about the opening of new work sites, but there are not enough for all the teams, and the low skip price stirs discontent among them. Amid the growing frustration, Etienne seeks to rally the local community to establish a solidarity fund. Meanwhile, the Maheu family faces increased financial pressure as their grandfather can no longer work. To help, the Maheudes offer Etienne the chance to live with them in exchange for rent, a proposal that Catherine finds difficult to accept.
