In a moment of drunken folly at a country fair, Michael Henchard sells his wife to a sailor. Over the years, he finds success, ultimately rising to the position of mayor in his town. Unexpectedly, his wife and daughter arrive to settle in the very same place, bringing his past back to haunt him.
