DI Alex Drake finds herself held captive and shot, only to awaken in a brothel in 1981. After being rescued during a police raid, she immediately identifies DCI Gene Hunt and his crew from the extensive reports written by DCI Sam Tyler about his experiences in 1973. Gene is focused on tackling the escalating drug issues in London and has set his sights on Edward Markham, a wealthy playboy he believes is the mastermind behind the operation. Meanwhile, Alex suspects Arthur Layton, the man who abducted her in 2008, might hold the secret to her returning to her own time.
