As the new millennium unfolds, Black women are at the forefront of cultural innovation. However, Essence magazine faces an identity crisis. A shift in ownership to the largely white-led media conglomerate Time Inc. begins to reshape the magazine’s core values, leaving some of its original audience feeling disconnected from the very publication meant to uplift and celebrate them.
