El Dorado (1921)
In the gritty cabaret El Dorado in Granada, Sibilla dances every night just to scrape by for her sick child. The boy’s father, Estiria, a respected local figure, refuses to acknowledge or support them—he’s terrified of ruining the engagement of his daughter Iliana to a wealthy nobleman. But Iliana secretly slips away from her own engagement party to meet her true love, a Swedish painter named Hedwick. After Estiria rejects her again, a desperate Sibilla spots her chance: she locks the lovers inside their Alhambra hideaway overnight to blackmail him.
