Gail Zappa, born Adelaide Gail Sloatman on New Year’s Day in 1945, passed away on October 7, 2015, leaving behind a legacy deeply intertwined with one of rock’s most inventive minds. She met Frank Zappa in Los Angeles in 1966, and their partnership began swiftly—they married while she was expecting their first child, Moon. The family grew to include Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva, each carving their own paths in the public eye.

Gail’s most enduring contribution came after Frank’s passing, when she took the reins of the Zappa Family Trust in 2002. As its steward, she meticulously managed the rights to his vast catalog of music, artwork, and public persona, ensuring his avant-garde output remained accessible to fans and scholars alike. Her tenure was marked by fierce protection of his creative integrity, navigating licensing deals and archival releases with a sharp legal mind. In 2015, just before her death from lung cancer, she transferred the Trust to her son Ahmet, passing the torch to the next generation.
