His journey began in January 2013, when he showcased his dance skills with the Dundalk Musical Society, performing in the beloved pantomime, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," at the An Táin Theatre.

Cairns truly captured attention with his first major role as Ronnie Winslow in the Dundalk Theatre Workshop production of "The Winslow Boy." His performance not only highlighted his acting prowess but also earned him two prestigious awards during the 2013-2014 season at An Táin Theatre: Best Young Actor and the accolade for Most Dramatic Scene / Best Moment of Theatre.
