Helen Caldicott

Helen Mary Caldicott is an Australian physician, writer, and campaigner against nuclear arms. Over her career, she established multiple organizations focused on resisting nuclear energy, depleted uranium weaponry, atomic weapons, their spread, and armed conflict more broadly.

Born in Melbourne in 1938, Caldicott earned her medical degree from the University of Adelaide in 1961. She later worked as a pediatrician at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. Her book "Nuclear Madness: What You Can Do!" (1978) brought her international attention, and she went on to write "Missile Envy" (1984) and "If You Love This Planet" (1992), among others.

In 1971, she co-founded the Australian Conservation Foundation's anti-nuclear efforts and later helped launch Physicians for Social Responsibility, serving as its president from 1978 to 1983. She also founded the Nuclear Policy Research Institute in 2001 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her 1982 documentary "If You Love This Planet" won an Academy Award. Caldicott received the Lannan Foundation's Prize for Cultural Freedom in 2003 and remains a prominent voice in the global disarmament movement.
