Kurt Browning
Kurt Browning, CM (born June 18, 1966), is a prominent Canadian figure skater celebrated for his groundbreaking achievements in the sport. He made history as the first skater to successfully execute a ratified quadruple jump in competition, a feat he accomplished on March 25, 1988, during the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Browning's illustrious career includes four World Championship titles, secured in 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1993, along with multiple accolades, including three Canadian national championships and a series of victories at professional events.
Browning represented Canada at three Winter Olympic Games, finishing 8th in 1988, 6th in 1992, and 5th in 1994, where he had the honor of carrying the Canadian flag during the opening ceremonies in Lillehammer. His impressive list of honors includes the Lou Marsh Trophy for top Canadian athlete in 1990, multiple Lionel Conacher Awards, and the prestigious ISU Skating Lifetime Achievement Award received in 2020. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1989 and has since been inducted into several esteemed halls of fame, including Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
Beyond his competitive success, Browning has made his mark as a choreographer, crafting programs for numerous elite skaters, including Tara Lipinski and Patrick Chan, and co-directing the 2011-12 Stars on Ice tour. A seasoned commentator for CBC since 2006, Browning continues to influence the skating world today. He married Alissa Czisny, a fellow figure skater, on August 11, 2022, following his previous marriage to Sonia Rodriguez.
