Peter William Sutcliffe (born 2 June 1946 – passed away 13 November 2020), widely recognized as Peter Coonan, was a notorious English serial killer responsible for the deaths of thirteen women and the attempted murders of seven more between 1975 and 1980. His heinous crimes led to him being labeled the Yorkshire Ripper, a grim comparison to the infamous Victorian killer Jack the Ripper.

Sutcliffe's criminal activities predominantly occurred in West Yorkshire, with two of his victims found in Manchester. His disturbing actions instigated widespread fear and media frenzy during the late 1970s, as authorities struggled to apprehend him. In 1981, he was apprehended and subsequently convicted, receiving twenty concurrent life sentences. In 2010, his sentence was escalated to a whole life order, indicating he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Criminal psychologist David Holmes characterized Sutcliffe as an "extremely callous, sexually sadistic serial killer," reflecting the chilling nature of his crimes. Sutcliffe’s legacy is one of horror and tragedy, leaving a lasting impact on the communities affected by his actions and on the field of criminal psychology. His life and crimes continue to serve as a grim reminder of the depths of human depravity.
